fabricâine combines the Romanian words for ‘dog’ and ‘factory’ and shines a light on uncomfortable realities: killing rather than finding solutions, and adoptions abroad.

Stray dogs in Romania

Situation

It is estimated that around 500,000 dogs live on the streets in Romania. Despite legal measures, the dog population continues to grow.

Adoption to Switzerland

Shelters in Romania are full: quick solutions are needed for the dogs. According to animal statistics from identitas, over 1,600 dogs were adopted from Romania to Switzerland in 2025. However, the effectiveness of this system is controversial.
